carnival flock to Ambato

This year's OP-marathon for disabled children in the hospital Vozandes HCJB in Quito has come to an end. Our comment of the week draws Eckhart Wolff reviews the action. He was even three weeks as a doctor at the operating table.

The first Ecuadorian patients come for inspection. 31 children were operated on. For it begins a long period of physical therapy, after at least 6 months to see the first results. For 13 years, we have a treatment for disabled children through. During this time, has done a great deal. About 300 children were operated
in 13 years. Children who otherwise would be for financial or other reasons, no hope. And the results are overwhelmingly positive - grateful parents, children with progress. But there are also negative experiences: parents who expected an operation by a miracle, miracles, we can not do. These parents are the long way in the development of their children until after puberty and not gone with have given up on the road. Your marriage is broken, some have fled and have their "charges" left behind. What we have learned as physicians?
It is good to operate as a team. Everyone has their experiences. Also brings us the international exchange of new ideas. We have learned in the 13 years that we still have to operate more aggressively. The better the results. Waiting is not much. I have been in the HCJB hospital in Shell, the ability to perform many of these operations themselves. This is also the reason that this year we had some less patient. And there's the first time a real bright spot for Ecuador. Local doctors are willing to cooperate. You want to collect patients. We will then examine together and operating within Quito. And something else we learned: We need more parents to encourage people not to hide their disabled children. We have noticed many negative examples in this regard.
